The teaching of the programme is undertaken by staff of the Institute, other academics and retail practitioners supported by industry tutors who are recognised teachers of the University. Students are able to attend three study school weekends per year and one tutorial per module. All study periods begin with a study school held in Singapore. Whilst the study schools are not compulsory students are encouraged to attend whenever possible because of the benefits of meeting and working with students from a wide range of backgrounds.

A typical MBA cohort will comprise both graduates and non-graduates. We acknowledge the fact that some persons will not have studied for a number of years and may be nervous about starting such a course. To facilitate learning we have an introductory programme on learning techniques at the first study school. This provides you with a step by step approach to studying at a distance and includes assignment and examination preparation, discussions with previous students and case study methods. Each study school will therefore cover a range of activities such as

  • briefings for the modules to be studied in the next study period
  • face-to-face teaching
  • case studies
  • examination of modules studied in the previous study period
  • business simulation
  • group work

In addition to the relevant text books, each student who joins the programme receives specially written teaching materials prepared by staff at the Institute. Each module is divided into units containing detailed material on a particular topic.

One aspect that the IRS prides itself on is the close working relationship it fosters between staff and students. Participants on the programme are encouraged to contact tutors to discuss any aspect of the programme. Because the MBA in Retailing restricts the number of places on its programme every year, it is able to provide this quality service to all students.
