  The MBA in Retailing by distance learning is unique in that it is the only MBA that caters specifically for the retail sector. It has been developed with the practising manager in mind and allows the individual to study at a time, place and pace which suits them best. The programme is modular with each subject (known as a Module) being studied separately. Launched in 1988 the MBA in Retailing places an emphasis upon individual coaching and tuition. It has positioned itself as a quality programme that offers a unique combination of general management skills and retail specific specialisms. Unlike some MBA programmes it has a limited number of places available.

In summary, the MBA programme

  • lasts approximately 24 months
  • is developed with the practicing manager in mind
  • allows the individual to study at a time, place and pace which suits him best
  • is academically challenging but also provides immediate applicability in the participant's workplace
  • is modular with each subject being studied separately

The programme has the following objectives

  • to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the industry and associated organisations;
  • to encourage individuals to use their skills more effectively in areas such as strategy, human resource management, and marketing;
  • to apply current management techniques;
  • to develop responses to cope with market turbulence;
  • to analyse problems and develop solutions on an industry-wide basis.

In order to complete the MBA an individual must complete ten taught modules and complete a dissertation. As individuals build up the number of credits passed, they qualify for more advanced academic qualifications. The qualifications offered at the University of Stirling are:

Four Modules Passed = Postgraduate Certificate in Retailing
Eight Modules Passed = Postgraduate Diploma in Retailing
Eight Modules Passed plus Dissertation = Masters of Business Administration in Retailing

The MBA is delivered in two variants, one in the UK and one in Singapore. There is no bar on applications to either programme. The Singapore programme is aimed primarily at individuals living and working in Asia and Oceania while the UK programme draws applicants from the rest of the world.

In these podcasts, some of our students talk about their experiences:
